What’s New in 2013?

Wednesday, 19 December 2012

New electronic gadgets seem never ending, yet it seems there is so much hype about the newest electronics, such as Google Glass or the iPod Touch, 5th Generation, that they are old news. The new iPods grace Christmas wish-lists, and models flaunt Google Glass as they glide down runways, and the talk is everywhere. If you haven’t heard all about the new must-haves, just take a look at the recent blogs right here at Padika Solutions.

So what is new? Or rather, what is going to be new in 2013? The question itself seems an invitation for a prediction of the future. And there is no shortage of predictions or prophesies. At the moment, End-of-the-World websites are counting down our last hours on Earth – the last hours of the earth.

If these were our last hours though, there wouldn’t be future predictions. The most scientific of the predictions though, is hardly new either. Scientists have believed for years that a solar flare will erupt in 2013, causing mass destruction on Earth. And not only that – it has happened before.

Solar flares have probably been happening since the beginning of Earth’s time, however, we only know of them being recorded since the beginning of the nineteenth century. In 1859, the most powerful solar flare ever recorded caused a geomagnetic storm of great proportions. As a result, telegraph systems failed and the sky lit up at night as if it were day. If a solar flare of that scale happened today – or in 2013, as predicted, it could potentially wipe out the internet and all communications systems and electricity, leaving the world in darkness – or in the blood red light of the flare.

Scientists expect the solar flare of 2013 to mirror the power of the flare of 1859. In fact, Liam Fox, England’s former Defense Secretary, called an emergency conference in London in January, 2011 to discuss the impending disaster. Also, former U.S. Defense Advisor, Dr. Avi Schnurr, warned: “A geomagnetic storm could shatter nations all over the earth. We cannot wait for disaster to spur us to action.” But what governments are planning to do to stop it remains a mystery – as if any government can stop the universe, which is maybe why it is not widely talked about, even though the prediction of an imminent solar flare is scientifically sound – and right around the corner.

Solar flares cause geomagnetic storms, which then create solar wind pressure that compresses, and then increases Earth’s magnetic field. The magnetism of the moon affects the oceans’ tides, regularly raising and lowering them many meters. Even our own bodies are mostly water. So if the magnetic field of the earth is to be so severely altered, what will happen to our planet? And what will happen to us?

A smaller flare occurred in Quebec in 1989, causing the failure of power stations for over nine hours, leaving more than 6 million people without power. Solar flares happen about once every 100 years, but the one due in 2013 is believed to be the worst one yet.

A disturbed magnetic field will have devastating effects to life as we know it on this planet, as so much of modern life and technology depends on magnetic fields. Radiation storms will cause massive power surges, which will then cause systems failures. The radiation will also manifest as radiation poisoning in living beings, including humans, causing multitude health problems including cancer and even death. Large doses are immediately fatal.

On the bright side, those who survive power outages and fatalities could find the heavens raining down precious jewels, as scientists also believe that dust storms from faraway planets could be full of rubies and sapphires. So maybe what will be new will be similar to the Gold Rush. Forget Google Glass. We may just get earthy and have a whole new gem industry, full of iJewels.

These days, the infamous chorus of “It’s The End of The World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” plays through the minds of many. With the day pegged by the Mayan calendar to be the end of the world looming closer, most people, even if not end-of-the-worlders, are at least curious to see if there will be any changes at all.

There are those who believe that December 21, 2012 is doomsday, that predictions for world destruction will prove true. After all, anybody living on this planet knows that natural disasters have been escalating since the turn of the century, the last time people became wrought with anxiety that it might all end. But it didn’t happen then. Will it happen now?

The new-age school of thought believes that the world will not be destroyed, but that instead we will come into a new age of enlightenment and world peace where we will possibly even rise to higher forms of consciousness.

Science says that there is an asteroid that is heading closer to Earth, but unlike the doomsdayers who believe it will collide with the earth on the day the Mayan calendar mysteriously runs out, NASA claims collision is only a possibility and that whether it hits Earth or passes, the event will not occur until April 13th, 2036.

However, another scientific theory is of a galactic alignment, where the sun and the earth will line up with a black hole at the center of the Milky Way, creating a gravitational pull upon the earth that will cause catastrophic natural disasters that could, possibly, end the earth in 2012.

While there may be some truth to any of the theories floating around, most people do not believe that “some” truth or possibilities equate the wiping out of the entire planet. Many people are recognizing major shifts in the world though, whether they be environmental or technological. And, in the world of technology, it just may be the end of the world as we know it…

… and the end of the age of smartphones as technology continues to evolve at lightning speed. Get ready to see more and more people walking around with hands-free, voice activated, augmented reality head-mounted displays (HMD), which essentially are glasses with built-in computers, such as the up and coming Google Glass, to be on the market as soon as 2014. Other companies such as Jawbone have similar technology in headsets, while still others are wrapping it around your wrist into watches like the E-Paper ones by Pebble.

It truly may be the end of the world as we know it as the beginning of a new era in technology will leave the smartphone outdated and take us into a future that we have only envisioned until now. The countdown continues, currently at 7 days, 17 hours left until…

Simply put, that’s not how you get things done.”

The latest features added to the Bing search engine are:

1). Better, faster web search results, improved with a cleaner interface.

2). A snapshot feature with which users may quickly finish searches by using the available information in a single place.

After manufacturing Smart phones, Google is said to be trying its hands in tablet computers, in order to give a tough competition to Apple’s iPads. It is believed that the search engine giant will sell the tablets directly into the market just like its rivals Apple and Amazon. According to some sources, it is expected that the upcoming Android based tablets will be co-branded with Google and the hardware of the devices will be manufactured by companies including Samsung and Asus. However, the details of the product were not revealed by the company sources but they told us that Google’s Android based software; Jelly Bean will be on the shelves in the middle of this year. It was also told that Google is jumping into its own tablet manufacturing because of the pending $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.

The online store of Google is also expected to have the Motorola tablets for sale. At present the 73 percent of tablet market is captured by Apple, to break the market of Apple, Google is planning to sell the tablets directly to the market. Google’s other competitor is Amazon.com, which directly sold its Kindle Fire which was launched a year back. Some sources revealed that Google is using the same strategies to sell the Tablets, such as the wireless carriers, who helped Android to up surge to position one of the mobile OS. We are not sure of who will win this Tablet race, let’s wait till the Tablet is shelved.

Microsoft’s much awaited Windows 8 was acclaimed to be a "no compromise" operating system (OS), which was all focused on both touch screen or a mouse and keyboard. It allured me, but after using it, I was not much impressed with it. If we see it through a developers view, the Windows 8 is definitely improved. It is surely successful for a desktop or notebook, but why will a desktop or notebook user who is comfortable with Windows 7 will go in for the updation to Windows 8. I was waiting for the Windows 8 so that I could write my experience, but in total I found it uncomfortable on a laptop and even worse on a desktop.

Motorola's "WebTop" platform is expected to be geared up with the latest version of Google's operating system, 5.0 Jelly Bean. If you have come across the Motorola Atrix phone, you surely know what the buzz is all about. The new OS will act as the motherboard for the laptop which will allow you to dock your Motorola phone into a special laptop attachment. The interface used by this newbie will probably have the Jelly Bean interface and it will give new dimensions to the laptops. Right now, even we don’t have much information related to the Android 5.0, Jelly Bean, but it will surely be smarter than the Android 4.0, says the company source.

Motorola has announced that the upcoming devices, expected to be on shelves, will come by the second quarter of 2012. According to Digitimes, the new devices will have Jelly Bean as the OS which will entirely outcast the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade process. Also the source revealed that Jelly Bean has all its eyes on tabs, netbooks and notebooks. With respect to Microsoft and Apple’s OS, Android can be a tough competitor. I just wish it to be better than the Android 4.0 and I am sure it will go way too far.

No, says the European court of justice in response to a case brought by Belgian music royalties firm Sabam against the website Netlog. According to ECJ, asking the social networks to establish anti-piracy filter software would be unsuccessful on the existing e-commerce decree. Sabam wanted the court to ensure the copyright of the music which is shared on the social networking sites. According to Sabam, by monitoring the music and videos on social networking sites, including, Netlog, the piracy of music and videos could be shielded.

The ECJ said in their judgement, "Accordingly, such an injunction would result in a serious infringement of the freedom of the hosting service provider to conduct its business since it would require that hosting service provider to install a complicated, costly, permanent computer system at its own expense."

According to SharesPost Inc., Facebook’s shares have up-surged to $44 from $40 in less than a week. The Initial Public Offering (IPO) of the social networking giant pushed its market from $100 billion to $102.6 billion based on an approximate 2.33 billion shares. According to this estimation, Facebook will get a higher position than PepsiCo Inc. (PEP), the snackmaker, and Citigroup Inc. According to the sources, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has this estimate that the company share value will go up to $100 billion from current $75 billion.

Erik Gordon, a professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, told the media persons that, “The upside for long-term investors is pretty shaky at these prices.” He further added that, “It’s got to be a Google and a half for the stock to move higher” in future.

However, there was no comment from the company’s spokesperson, but a spokesman for San Bruno, California-based SharesPost, confirmed the auction in which it is expected that Facebook will issue the 117.1 million Class A shares and 1.76 billion Class B shares, which are outstanding.

Push or Pull ?

“Push” or “Pull” from Yonge and Finch ?

It’s been years that push marketing is not the only advertisement strategy that businesses follow. While TV commercials, billboards, magazine ads, etc are still in effect in many marketing campaigns,  new media play a much more significant role in those campaigns every day.

While the medium can be different, the lack of interaction from the consumer side is what defines push marketing.  When a marketing message is sent through TV or radio for instance, the information is “pushed” to the consumer and theconsumer cannot have any engagement or interaction with the message but absorbing it.

Pull marketing on the other hand puts the consumer in the position to demand and “pull” the information they need from the seller.  A forum on a new product is one of the best examples of this kind of marketing.

Here in Padika, we try to combine different pull and push methods to make your marketing campaign successful.
